Manish Sabharwal: Five stories that have shaped worldview of TeamLease Services' Chairman

Posted by criss brown
By Manish Sabharwal, Chairman, TeamLease Services

Poet Maya Angelou captures a wonderful truth when she says that the universe is not made of atoms but stories. Narratives are powerful not only because they capture the human condition in ways that facts, figures and logic cannot but they influence us in ways that become obvious only in retrospect. Here are five stories from books and movies that have shaped my view of the world.

The story of Gandhi

There is something for everybody in life of Mohandas K. Gandhi; his innovations of satyagraaha and hyphenated identities, his imagination in using the symbolism of salt, his experiments with personal self-control, his high command style that denied Bose the congress leadership, his ability of establish diverse friendships, his choice of Nehru over Patel, his choice of peanut butter rotis for lunch, and so much else.

Team of Rivals

We have done a better job with our second venture because every entrepreneur learns the hard way that the team you create is the company you create. We learnt that companies who do great things have different skill sets around the table but it is hard to avoid the cognitive bias of humans wanting to work with people who are like them (race, language, schools, discipline).

The story of India's independence struggle

The story of how 200,000 white people came to rule over 220 million brown ones is interesting but understandable; the British had superior technology and the raj was a joint venture with many Indians (662 Maharajas, the Zamindars of West Bengal, the Talukdars of United Provinces, the Gurkhas, etc).

But the more fascinating story is about how independence was won from an empire on which the sun never set. This struggle  ..

The Shawshank Redemption

The hardest part of building a company is working silently over long periods of time and keep the faith in goals that are faraway. Sanskrit has a wonderful word called Mantragupti that means the strength in silence.
The story of Amazon.com

One of entrepreneurship's most difficult challenges is balancing the long and short term. We entrepreneurs write business plans in poetry but execute them in prose and almost everything takes more time and money than you think.

For me the story of amazon.com and its founder Jeff Bezos is an inspiring example of being able to convince stakeholders to overlook short term metrics (profits) in pursuit of an ambitious and wonderful long term  ..

Chief Judicial Magistrate Anand Kumar Yadav directed the UP police to keep Roy in custody till 2 PM on March 4 and ensure that he is by then produced before the Supreme Court which had issued non-bailable warrant against him two days ago for his failure to appear before it Supreme Court which had issued non-bailable warrant against him two days ago for his failure to appear before it in a case of non-refund of Rs 20,000 crore to investors.

Police had moved an application before the CJM seeking his custody instead of transit remand and Roy's counsel V K Shahi also did not oppose it.

65-year-old Roy pleaded that he be allowed to stay at his home but said he would go by the court's decision.

The consultant has released the 17th edition of the Global Occupancy Costs - Offices, which presents outlook and analysis of the costs of occupying prime office space across 138 markets worldwide.

Posted by criss brown
NEW DELHI: Financial wealth in Asia has more than tripled since 2001 to over USD 80 trillion and if the current trend persists the growth will be even faster in India than in China.

According to HSBC, Asia excluding Japan is rapidly catching up with the United States and assuming that current trends persist, emerging Asia should surpass the United States by 2015
Asia, including Japan, has more than tripled its financial wealth since 2001 to just over USD 80 trillion, the financial major said.

The calculations were done by adding the value of bonds and stocks to broad money supply and stripping out net foreign holdings, HSBC said.

Country-wise, Japan and China clearly account for the largest chunk in Asia. India, meanwhile, might have had a stronger showing last year if it wasn't for the slide of its currency over the previous 12 mon ..

Microsoft to cut manufacturer price for Windows by 70%: Reports

Posted by criss brown
CHICAGO: Microsoft Corp is reducing the price of Windows 8.1 for manufacturers of low-cost computers and tablets by 70 per cent to compete with cheaper products like Google Inc's Chromebooks, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the program.

Computer makers will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and pre-install it on devices retailing for under $250, compared with the standard fee of $50, Bloomberg reported. Any product that meets the price limit will  ..

Sales of Microsoft's Windows 8 system, including its latest Windows 8.1 version, have been relatively slow since its launch 15 months ago. More than 200 million Window 8 licenses were sold, lagging Windows 7, which sold 240 million within its first year, according to Tami Reller, head of marketing for Microsoft.

The pace reflects a steady two-year decline in personal computer sales, as smartphones and tablet sales explode. Sales of tablets are set to overtake PCs worldwide next year.
