15-yr-old Ludhiana activist challenge Kanhaiya Kumar
Posted by criss brown at 05:53
A 15-year-old girl, who was honoured during Republic Day for her contribution to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, has challenged the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar, for an open debate over freedom of expression.
She also advised Kanhaiya Kumar to think before making any statement and to avoid using abusive language against the Prime Minister who was elected by the citizens of India.
Jhanvi Behal who invited Kanhaiya for debate is a student of DAV Public School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar. She is also an active member of an NGO Raksha Jyoti Foundation and was honoured on Republic Day for her contribution to many projects including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
While talking to Hindustan Times, Jhanvi Behal said the constitution gives us freedom to express, but it does not mean that we can cross limits. Kanhayia Kumar and others have been misusing the fundamental right for their political gain.
“What has happened in JNU campus in the name freedom of expression is not tolerable for any Indian. The students were raising anti-India slogans, when armymen were sacrificing their lives fighting against Pakistan sponsored terrorists, ”said Jhanvi.
“The student leaders for their political gain have been indulging in mud-sledging and using abusing language against the Prime Minister, who is elected by citizens of India. Their act will malign the image of India in the whole world,” she added.
Jhanvi Behal has raised several public issues in the past. Recently, she had filed a writ in Punjab and Haryana high court against adult movies and porn content on social networking sites.
She also appeared in the court in her school uniform. The high court had pronounced judgment in her favour. She had also taken the matter of road blockage of various organizations to court.

Will make profit of Rs 31 on each Rs 251 phone: Mohit Goel
Posted by criss brown at 07:21
NEW DELHI: Since he announced the launch of a mobile phone for Rs 251, Mohit Goel has faced widespread scepticism, along with visits by police and income tax officials at his rented two-storey office in Noida. However, the Amity University graduate insists that he will not only deliver the phones at the stunning price he has quoted, but also make a profit of Rs 31 on each handset sold.
Why am I being hounded? What wrong have I done?" Goel asked in the course of an exclusive interview with TOI. The director of Ringing Bells insists that his new venture is not a fly-by-night operation and will begin customer deliveries from April 15.
"Has there ever been a case of income-tax evasion against me or my company, or has there been an FIR filed against me in any police station? Why am I being called a 'bhagora' (who'll run away with the money)? I intend to do a valid business, just like any other startup, and I have a business plan ready."
The company claims it has received over 7 crore registrations on its website since it started accepting applications on February 18. "We are taking online bookings for only 25 lakh units in the first batch due to limited supplies, while giving another 25 lakh through offline distributors. I will deliver the handsets before June 30. All the money that we receive from customers through the payment gateway will be kept in an escrow account and we will touch it only when we deliver the devices." The company has an account with ICICI Bank.
Goel, and his much-older confidant Ashok Chadha, who is the president of the company, insists that there have not been any infringements on design and other matters.
"Some of the devices had the Adcom branding as we sourced panel (screen) from them. However, the final device will have our branding and the phone will have the same features and design that we had showcased."
The dual SIM Freedom 251 device carries a 4-inch display, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory with a 1.3GHZ quad-core processor, dual cameras and comes with a charger, headphone and one-year warranty.
The duo say that they have a carefully laid-out business model to manage the disruptive price for the device "The price that works out per device is roughly around Rs 1,500," Chadha says. insists, though significantly lowering it down from the Rs 2,500 he had announced on the day of the unveiling of the device.
"We will source the devices from a supplier in Noida, who will be assembling the units for us after getting components from Taiwan." And while we do this, we also start the work to identify land and suppliers for setting up our manufacturing locations. For this, we have identified Noida while also looking at locations in Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Bihar and Punjab," Chadha says.

And just how does he bring down the cost to Rs 251, and also earn a profit? "Economies of scale gets it down to around Rs 1,200, and thereafter an online sales model cuts down marketing and sales expenses, giving us further savings," he says. And to this we will add marketing piggybacks from companies whose applications we load on the devices. We will save around Rs 300 per device more through this," Chadha says.
The unveiling of the phone on February 17 had created quite a flutter among existing handset suppliers, prompting industry body Indian Cellular Association to file a complaint with the government. (ICA) -- which has members such as Samsung, Apple, Sony, Lava, Micromax, Karbonn, Motorola and HTC -- ICA president Pankaj Mohindroo wrote a letter to telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, expressing doubts about the intentions of Ringing Bells, saying it is not possible to supply a phone for Rs 251.
Also, there were allegations that the company had ripped off the design of the prototype from American phone major Apple's iPhone, while also giving out devices sourced from a local electronics importer Adcom.
The company is also talking to large e-commerce companies, such as travel website Goibibo, to get their apps on the devices. "We will also monetize from the heavy traffic on our website and will make it into a marketplace for other brands to hop on. This will also help us to bring down the cost."

India’s cheapest smartphone from Ringing Bells to cost less than Rs 500
Posted by criss brown at 22:03
Domestic handset maker Ringing Bells will launch India’s most affordable smartphone for under Rs 500 later this week, a move that is set to disrupt the booming handset market in the country.
The launch is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for “empowering India to the last person, transforming India’s growth story”, the Noida-based company said.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar will launch the smartphone ‘Freedom 251’ on February 17.
“The phone will be popularly priced at under Rs 500... this event and launch stands as a true testimony of success of the latest initiatives taken by the Government of India,” according to a media invite sent by the firm.
At present, smartphones available in the market are priced around Rs 1,500. Last year, DataWind had announced that it is teaming up with Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCOM) to launch the world’s most affordable smartphone, priced at Rs 999. The phone is yet to hit the market.
Established last year, Ringing Bells will start with the assembly of handsets in Phase-I and aims at full indigenous development of the feature-rich smartphones, it said.
It did not disclose any other details about manufacturing, products and pricing.
A new entrant in the Indian mobile phone market, Ringing Bells had launched one of India’s cheapest 4G smartphone at Rs 2,999, recently. It has launched two other feature phones in the market

How Pakistan Army blocked Indian doctor's noble project
Posted by criss brown at 02:12Amritsar-based eye surgeon Padmashree Dr Daljit Singh had a noble dream to set up a charitable hospital and a university in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of the founder of the Sikh religion Guru Nanak Dev, which lies in Punjab province of Pakistan
The borders dividing India and Pakistan may be witnessing exchange of fire in place of sweets for now, but common citizens on both sides have always spread the message of humanity and brotherhood. While a Lahore-based painter Iqbal Hussain showed respect to de-consecrated temple idols and spread the message of communal harmony, an Amritsar-based world famous eye surgeon Dr Daljit Singh, 81, wanted to set up a charitable eye hospital and a university at Nankana Sahib - the birthplace of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev.
Dr Daljit Singh and his Karachi-based friend late Prof TH Kirmani had not only managed the land for his dream project but both had even laid the foundation stone on February 25, 2007 to build the hospital.
"We had infact planned a University in the name of Guru Nanak Dev. The charitable Hospital was part of the project which was planned on one acre. We were hopeful that the Sikh devotees visiting Nankana Sahab will donate generously to the project but it did not advance beyond the foundation stone," Dr Daljit Singh told Mail Today.
Dr Daljit Singh told Mail Today that the Pakistan government has given the status of a holy city to Nankana Sahib but the health amenities in and around it are still inadequate. He wanted to serve the local people by setting up the hospital as cataract blindness is very common in Nankana Sahib district.
"We wanted to spread the message of universal brotherhood by serving the people. But the dream was never actualised. Now they have eased visa norms for senior citizens but who will receive me at Wagah border? My friend TH Kirmani is no more, he died in an accident four years ago," says Dr Daljit Singh who still lives with his dream to open a charitable hospital in Pakistan.Singh says his dream can never be fulfilled as the tension between India and Pakistan is growing. He has visited Pakistan two times and is all praise for Pakistan where there are a number of state-of-the-art charitable hospitals.
Dr Daljit Singh, who has made Amritsar a mecca for eye patients from all over the world, was awarded the Padmashree in 1987 by the Indian government. He is the first ophthalmologist to introduce Intra Ocular Lens implant in India in the 1970s. He is known for his expertise in cataract and glaucoma surgeries.

India Inc Pledges Over $70 Billion for PM Modi's Digital India Push
Posted by criss brown at 11:15
New Delhi: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi urged more companies to make electronic and digital goods,
reviving his campaign promise to bridge India's digital divide backed
by over $70 billion (4.5 lakh crore rupees) in investment pledges.
India's top businessmen including brothers Mukesh and Anil Ambani, Azim
Premji and Sunil Mittal were present in Delhi as the PM launched the
'Digital India Week'.
Here is your 10-point guide to this story:
- Digital India is a massive tech push to provide electronic governance and universal phone connectivity across the country. The aim is to bridge the digital divide, bringing in large investments in technology manufacturing.
- "E-Governance is going to change into M-Governance... M is not Modi Governance, it is mobile governance," the PM said with a smile, sketching a broad roadmap in his 27-minute speech of how he plans to digitise India.
- PM Modi spoke of the need to boost local manufacturing of electronics - the country's largest import after oil. "Why can't we make quality electronic goods that are globally competitive?" he said in a speech to a packed 14,000-seater indoor stadium.
- Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani and Bharti Enterprises head Sunil Bharti Mittal led a roll call of industrialists sharing the dais with the Prime Minister, promising investments of over 4,50,000 crore rupees ($71 billion) to back the government's initiative.
- Besides investment, the initiative is also expected to create 18 lakh jobs. PM Modi said, "Make in India is important but 'Design in India' equally important for digital India."
- The push to connect India and drive a national fibre optic network, approved by the previous Congress-led government in 2011, has made slow progress in utilizing technology to bring services and deliverables to those outside large towns and cities.
- India's average Internet speed was ranked 115th globally earlier this year among countries studied by services provider Akamai Technologies. And India had just a little over 100 million broadband subscribers at the end of April, out of a population of close to 1.3 billion.
- A growing economy and falling handset prices make India one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world, and PM Modi wants to harness that to drive social development in fields like education and health.
- Outlining his 15-point digital dream, the Prime Minister said today information technology can be used in a big way to eliminate corruption. "I dream of digital India where technology ensures that government and citizen interaction is incorruptible."
- PM Modi has used social media and particularly Twitter, where he has 13 million followers, to style himself as a leader in touch with technology.

Hillary Clinton declares 2016 Democratic presidential bid
Posted by criss brown at 10:54
Former US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton has formally entered the 2016 race for the White House in a bid
to become the first woman US president.
She launched her campaign website on Sunday, telling Americans she wanted to be their "champion". Mrs Clinton ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 but lost to Barack Obama.
The overwhelming Democratic favourite, she had been expected to declare her candidacy for months.
In a video on her website, Mrs Clinton declared: "I am running for president".
"Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times," she said, "but the deck is still stacked in favour of those at the top.
"Everyday Americans need a champion and I want to be that champion," she added
Analysis: Gary O'Donoghue, BBC News, Des Moines, Iowa
The launch of Hillary Clinton's campaign for the presidency was meant to be low-key.It was meant to reflect the idea that it was all about ordinary Americans and the everyday concerns of the middle class.
But whether she likes it or not, Mrs Clinton is a huge name in politics and reinventing herself as the embodiment of change won't be easy.
True, she is unlikely to face any stiff competition from her own side for the nomination, but Republicans have been unrelenting in their attacks on her and that will only increase.
She will also have to find a convincing vision for America that will capture the imagination of the voters.
Elections are usually about the future and Mrs. Clinton has to prove that she's not all about the past.
Twitter reaction
Is this Hillary Clinton's time?
Mrs Clinton has already had the backing of Mr Obama, who told a news conference at the Summit of the Americas in Panama on Saturday that she would make an "excellent president".
And her successor in the post of secretary of state, John Kerry, called her a "good friend", telling ABC's This Week programme she "did a terrific job of rebuilding alliances that had been shredded over the course of the prior years".
But the attacks from the Republicans have already begun.
Republican presidential contender Rand Paul criticised Mrs Clinton for her handling of a September 2012 attack on a US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, in which the US ambassador was among those killed.
He also said questions remained about funds received by a charity set up by Mr and Mrs Clinton.
Jeb Bush, former Florida Governor and brother of George W Bush who is also considering whether to stand as a Republican candidate, tweeted: "We must do better than Hillary."
Hillary Clinton - her Washington career so far
- Tried to reform US healthcare during husband Bill's first term as president (1993-1997) but her plan never reached a vote in Congress
- Stood by her husband when his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky was exposed, 1997-98
- Elected as Democratic senator for New York, 2000
- Voted in favour of the Iraq war in 2003 but later distanced herself from the war
- Ran for the Democratic nomination in 2008 but conceded in favour of Barack Obama
- Served as US secretary of state 2009-2013
- Embroiled in controversy over the attack on a US consulate in Benghazi, Libya in 2012
- Investigated by the State Department for her use of a private email server, circumventing legal requirements
